How to Set Up a Construction Site Crane
PDF Print E-mail

Cranes are used on most major building sites, from the smallest housing development to the largest skyscrapers. There are a wide range of crane sizes, and each crane must be handled by a qualified operator. The erection of a crane must be carried out by those who have undergone the necessary training. Improper assembly of a crane could result in an accident, which could prove fatal.

  • Set a tower crane mast section into concrete using steel anchors, making sure that it is perfectly vertical using your spirit level.

  • Add each mast section by bolting it onto the section below until you have reached your required height. You will need other machinery to do this, such as a scissor lift or telescopic boom equipment.

  • Assmble the jibs (horizontal sections) of the crane, lifting them into place using another crane. These, too, need to be affixed to the mast using steel bolts. You will have two jibs: one that carries the chains used for lifting materials and one that is used as a counterweight to prevent the crane from toppling over.

  • Test the crane by loading it to 100% capacity; once it passes, you are able to use your tower crane to construct your building.
