How to Assemble Tower Cranes

Tower cranes are used on many construction sites to transport materials from one place to another at great height. They are used to construct high-rise apartment blocks and other buildings where a regular wheel-mounted crane will not suffice. Assembling a tower crane is a very difficult task that must only be carried out by someone who is qualified to do so.

1.Excavate the ground for the concrete tower crane base and fill the area with concrete. Sink steel anchors into the concrete to hold the first crane mast section. Leave for 24 hours to cure.

2.Once the concrete has set, bolt the first mast section to the anchors and ensure that it is vertical by using your spirit level.

3.Add each section of mast by bolting it onto the one beneath until the required height is reached. You will need other machinery to do this, such as telescopic boom equipment or a scissor lift.

4.Assemble the horizontal sections (jibs) of the crane. These will need to be lifted into place using another crane and fixed to the vertical mast using steel bolts. There are two jibs, and one fixes onto either side of the mast: one carries the lifting chains, and the other houses all of the counterweights to ensure the crane does not topple over.

5.Test the crane by loading it to full capacity. You are now ready to use your tower crane.
